THE TILES WORKSHOP - THE AZULEJARIA - Rio deJaneiroHow was it born? |
ORIGIN and story
IN 2003, Inscrire and artist Françoise Schein had just finalized the construction of a major carioca project in Copacabana at Metro Station Siquiera Campos. Her collaborator Laura Taves who worked on the project used this opportunity to continue the tiles works with some 10 women who used to participate with Schein's earlier projects. These women formed a team practicing ceramic painting from Schein's traditional portuguese knowledge learned in Lisbon at the Viuva Lamego Factory. Consequently they have gained experience in many fields through training, learning, and creating. Over time, the women gained confidence and became able to transmit their own knowledge to others: to children, youngsters and adults at their workshops. Lead by caricoca architect Laura Taves, the Azulejaria was born and became a self sustainable workshop. Below some of the craft the women are creating and selling

The Tile Workshop has its roots on the specific project 'The Way to the Human Rights, conceived by by parisian artist Françoise Schein with the Association Inscrire, that she founded and has directed since then. In Brazil,Inscrire has promoted social transformation in the communities in which her artistic production took place since 1999 by creating an artistic awareness in the local population while remaining the author of the projects of Vidigal, Copacabana, Providencia and the 5 favelas' APD projects to be seen here below.
Inscrire and Azulejaria have worked with various partners in Brazil and, in 10 years, they have implemented more than 30 projects with the participation of over 500 people.
In 2012, the Azulejaria has become an independant, selfsustainable workshop. |

In 2009, 7 years after Schein has given her atelier ( including her oven, tiles and all her material to these women ) one can say that the atelier became sustainable as urban developpement thanks to architect Laura Taves as thelocal director . The strenght of this process is to enable people involved with an artist work, to acheive a greater knowledge of their own cultural environment and therefore creating for themselves, a sense of citizenship : the particpants acquired skills, and have been recognized as professionals. |
For 10 years all the work produced by The Tile Worshop,, has been blooming. |
