The Garden of the Human Rights -----<>------ Der Garten der Menschenrechte

PROTECTED DIFFERENCE at the Rhododendron‘s Park in Bremen

In Bremen, in 2001, philosopher Barbara Reiter with the team of INSCRIRE has chosen the Rhododendron Park, the Botanic Garden to write the text of the Human Rights as an ongoing bronze band of letters that winds through the park along the footpaths.

In this way one can walk and read at the same time, reflecting upon Human Rights while being a part of Nature in its multiciplicity of variety of species. The project won the local prize of Agenda 21 after the conference in Rio in 1992

Fascination and respect for ecological variety helps us to contemplate the importance of the Human Rights. We follow them as we follow footpaths in a park, we can obey them and we can ignore them.

In the Garden of the Human Rights we can read them at leisure while walking through an environment consisting of plants, various fellow creatures from abroad and home, each different from each other, coming to be and passing away every year around the permanence of the Human Rights made of bronze.

In the variety of botanical species we enjoy multitude: a million flowers of just one kind don´t make a garden. Human individuals are different from each other. They also come in kinds of their own: Individuals belong to
ethnic, cultural and national groups; Together we make up one world. Without our differences life would be absolutely unrecognizable. Life as we know it consists of differences.

We have created an educative program in which the local schoolstudents are initiated to the human rights texts and are in charge of the maintenance of the works by cleaning up the bronze. These actions of studies and maintenance of the work reinforce among the students, the importance of the founding text.

The Association Inscrire and the Evangelisches Bildungswerk have producted a brochure (in German, and in English) for the divulgation of the project.

Built in 2000, the project has received the price Agenda 2001.

Witha von Gregory has organized a program with the local city school to teach the human rights while maintaining the work of art: once a year, the youngsters of the local schools come to the park and clean the bronze plates while reading the meaning of the sentences anchored now into the ground of Germany . This yearly action reinforces their level of consciousness.
