A CITY AS A TREE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS:
This project is creating a large visible public artpiece about Human Rights produced with the active participation of the students of the IAAP - International Academy of Art, Palestine-, the Palestinian Technical College, the Birzeit University and with the general population of the City of Ramallah.
--------------------------PLANTING THE TREE-------------------------------
Schematic design of the project explained to the students
The city map of Ramallah, anchors the project to the earth. It will be interpreted as a tree of creation. Each street is designed as to form branches. Tree leaves are designed as large containers "leaves" incorporating texts and images taken from the Human Rights text and other poetic or literary texts. The projectl explores new ways of representing urban space as the expression of democracy. The interrelations of these elements transforms the city into a model for the world.
From March 201 till the 31st of october 2011, Inscrire has worked at creating this democracy tree, with the people of Ramallah.
That day - on the 31st of October - we inaugurated the tree for democracy as the UNESCO accepted Palestine as a full member. .
A tree is alive, it grows, it is a part of nature, it provides shelter, and it bears fruits. A tree has wisdom, it knows time. A tree represents us, and how we are to act.
Recently FrançoIse Schein was invited in China by the Foshan Ceramic Festival, to present Inscrire’s public art works in subways and cities. She was in Guangzhou, ( Canton in the South) and Changsha ( the Center of China). The discovery of the Chinese people was a joy : the Chinese people have been incredibly kind and caring to Françoise and took great care of her traveling arrangements while she discovered the new contemporary and extremely vivid China.
The International Ceramic Festival opened with a fabulous Chinese inauguration event, including dragon dances, several discourses by important Chinese designers and by F. Schein. After a visit un the festival Schein presented her work in a conference translated by chinese ceramic artist Zang Yushan.

Since 1989 Association Inscrire has created large-scale collaborative public works of art on ceramic tiles related to Human Rights working with partners all over the world. Initiated by Françoise Schein, the ceramic panels are part of an ongoing project that raises awareness of citizenship and human rights through the creation of permanent works in new and existing public spaces, which also offers craft skills and training to disadvantaged communities. Public works have been created in Paris, Lisbon, Stockholm, Berlin and Brussels.
For the Estação Luz subway station in Sao Paulo, a series of ceramic panels on walls and columns has been created as a pilot work working towards a 700-sq.metre project to be developed in 2011-12. The work was made with the participation of hundreds of youngsters from various underpriviledged quarters of the city including the Escola Municipal de Ensino Fundamental Profª. Isabel Vieira Ferreira. The project introduced pedagogical methodology and booklets to enable future teachers to teach awareness of Human Rights.
The ceramic panels were created by a Franco – Brazilian team of artists – Françoise Schein, Tatiana Amaral, and Laura Taves, Director of the Atelier Azulejaria / Tile Workshop, Rio de Janeiro, and with the workshops of the art centre at SESC Pompéia; Associação Danyann; Sao Paulo Metropolitano, and the City of Sao Paulo. ‘Inscrire is a non profit organization that works with local populations in communities throughout the European Union and the world to conceive and create artistic works and events which highlight human rights principles and cultural diversity, and spark discussion and reflection about both.’ Inscrever Direitos Humanos na Estação Luz do Metrô - Françoise Schein and collaborators – Azulejos (ceramic tiles) the Estação Luz do Metrô, Sao Paulo, Brazil - Inaugurated 24 November 2010

The Hoopoe
The universe is smaller
than a butterfly
in the yard of the great heart.
At the seed of wheat we met,
and in the loaf of bread
and the passage
we took on different roads.
Are we what we use to be?
On our traces there are trees.
In our travels there is
a beautifull moon.
And we have a life
in the life of others
Psalm Three On the day when my words
were earth...
I was a friend to stalks of wheat.
***
On the day when my words
were wrath
I was a friend to chains.
***
On the day when my words
were stones
I was a friend to streams.
***
On the day when my words
were a rebellion
I was a friend to earthquakes.
***
On the day when my words
were bitter apples
I was a friend to the optimist.
***
But when my words became
honey...
flies covered
my lips!...
