As KANAL – Centre Pompidou continues its transformation and prepares for its opening in 2024, the institution is partnering with the INSCRIRE association to mobilize citizens from the surrounding neighborhoods in an inclusive, participatory project.
Artist Françoise Schein and the INSCRIRE team aim to create a visual, urban and artistic link between the inhabitants of the Molenbeek Saint-Jean district, as part of the Kanal Collectif project, supported by KANAL – Centre Pompidou. This three-year project will be carried out in collaboration with 3rd year P-Vente students from the Athénée Royal Toots Thielemans.
The public artwork Histoires de Vies, produced with students from Athénée Royale Toots Thielemans in Molenbeek Saint-Jean, was conceived as a work of resilience by young immigrants in the face of the harsh lives they have lived, most of them being teenagers with their families who have come to Belgium in search of peace and freedom. 21 young Syrians, Romanians, Moroccans and Afghans recount their Odyssey.
The work was carried out over 8 months at the ARTT school (between November 2021 and June 2022) and involved several meetings, including 2 sessions of museum visits and 11 sessions of studio work up to April 2022. In addition to these workshop days, there was the purely artistic creative work carried out by the artist in her studio.
The result is a 36m2 sandstone mural, installed and inaugurated on June 28, 2022 on Place St Jean Baptiste in Molenbeek.
